The Policy of Non-Intervention toward the Third Reich
Memorandum for Charles Burlingham, 9 April 1938
After Germany invades Austria on 12 March 1938, the brutal persecution of Austrian Jews begins. Because no international protest against these events is forthcoming, Einstein attempts to win over international organizations like the churches and the Red Cross to plead for the European Jews. Einstein drafts a memorandum inviting them to participate in such a campaign, emphasizing that a policy of nonintervention can not be tolerated when a country threatens the life of a minority.
