By coincidence Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovers in 1895 that when cathode rays collide with metal at a high speed, previously unknown, invisible rays are generated. These rays are similar to light, but can penetrate opaque materials. The discovery soon finds application in the fields of medicine and materials testing.
