Flint Glass Prism
Joseph Fraunhofer, nineteenth century
The spectral analysis of light sources emerges as a consequence of Newton’s observation that white light can be refracted into its component colors by a prism. One of the pioneers of this technique is Fraunhofer, who perfects the production of prisms, and whose discoveries include the absorption lines in the solar spectrum.
