Clocks in the gravitational field
The less the gravitational field acting on clocks, the faster they run. Using the uncorrected onboard time of a satellite at 20 kilometres height above sea level would lead navigation on Earth astray by about 12 kilometres a day.

This effect of General Relativity is clearly stronger than that of Special Relativity, and it acts in the opposite direction.

For the Global Positioning System (GPS), the total relativistic error amounts to about 10 kilometres per day. This error is corrected by the GPS receiver.
